Community College Certificate Programs 

Central Oregon Community College (Oregon), Career Pathway Certificate of Completion, Automotive Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) Technician

The certificate prepares students for the Automotive Service Excellence certification in (A6) Automotive Electrical/Electronic Systems and (L3) Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist. 

Cerritos College, Alternative Fuels Service Technician Certification

One of six automotive mechanical repair certificates offered by Cerritos College, this certificate program focuses on EV and other alternative fuel vehicles.

City College of San Francisco (California), Automotive Hybrid and EV Technology Certificate of Achievement

This certificate is for students seeking training in hybrid and electric vehicle maintenance. This certificate includes instruction in basic automotive systems, a thorough understanding of automotive electrical systems, and an in depth study of hybrid and electric vehicles, system operation, inspection, diagnosis and repair. Prepares the student for entry-level employment in the maintenance and repair of existing and emerging technology hybrid and electric vehicles.

Chabot College (California), Certificate of Achievement: Hybrid and Alternative Vehicles

This certificate provides students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to safely and properly diagnose, repair, service and maintain hybrid, electric, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles. 

College of the Desert (California), Automotive Alternative Fuels Certificate of Achievement 

The emphasis of the Automotive Alternative Fuels Certificate is on key alternative vehicle systems including their basic operation, function, and service. The systems include engine management, emission controls, electronic/electronic controls, and on-board diagnostics related to alternate fueled vehicles. This certificate is designed to prepare students and incumbent employees for entry-level positions at local automotive dealerships, independent repair facilities, national repair chains, and parts suppliers, as well as fleet services specializing in alternative fuels. 

Columbus State Community College (Ohio), Alternative Energy Automotive Technician Certificate

Topics covered in the program include: advanced electrical systems diagnosis and repair, advanced engine diagnosis and repair, hybrid vehicle theory and operation, hybrid vehicle system servicing: safety precautions and procedures, advanced hybrid diagnosis and repair, alternative fueled vehicle diagnosis and repair, and alternative gaseous fuels. 

Cypress College (California), Certificate Program in Automotive Technology, Electric/Hybrid technician pathway

Cypress College provides state-of-the art, hands-on automotive diagnosis and repair education and training. this program is one of many Cypress College certificate programs which includes pathways for employment at new vehicle dealers and independent repair facilities.

El Camino College (California), Certificate of Achievement, Hybrid, Electric, and Alternative Fuels

This program focusses on an introduction to alternative fuel vehicles, hybrid and electric/fuel-cell technology, and diagnosis and repair of hybrid, fuel-cell, and electric vehicle repair.

Fresno City College, Advanced Vehicle Technology Certificate

Advanced technology vehicles including alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are a common platform for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles. Students will perform service and repair on vehicles in state-of-the-art labs, using tools, and technologies that will ensure they are workforce ready and qualified for industry certifications. 

Glendale Community College (Arizona), Automotive Electronic/Electrical Systems, Certificate of Completion

The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Automotive Electronic/Electrical Systems provides individuals with the technical knowledge and skills needed by automotive technicians specializing in the area of electronic/electrical systems. The curriculum within this certificate aligns with the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Automobile and Light Truck Certification A6 Test. 

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (California), Hybrid and Electric Vehicle technology Career Studies Certificate

National Science Foundation (NSF) created an Advanced Technical Education program to enable career and technical education colleges such as Reynolds Community College to offer high-tech and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) related technician education. For Reynolds and its students this translates to courses supporting new electronic control systems installed in modern vehicles such as automatic braking and steering, self-parking and parking assist, lane departure warning systems and autonomous controls.

Long Beach City College, Advanced Transportation Technology Certificate of Achievement

The Long Beach City College Advanced Transportation Technology Certificate of Achievement is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for today’s technicians, service writers, and parts support specialists. The program focuses on the industry standard of fix-it-right scores by providing students with the opportunity to develop skills and resolve real-world customer concerns.

Los Angeles Trade Technical College (California), Hybrid & Electric Plug-In Vehicle Technology Certificate

The courses listed in this certificate compile a comprehensive list of job-related skills needed to acquire hybrid and electric plug-in vehicle maintenance and repair technical skills. They cover basic, intermediate and advanced level training of these vehicles including the different configurations used in the automotive, transit and trucking industries. These skills will prepare an individual for entry-level employment or career advancement in the maintenance and repair of hybrid vehicles in all sectors of the transportation industry.

Modesto Junior College, Automotive Technology Certificate of Achievement with the coursework in automotive electricity and alternative fuels

The Automotive Technology program is designed to provide training in automobile repair, maintenance theory, study of factory manuals and publications, and applications of methods used in the auto servicing and repair industry.

Montgomery College (Maryland), Automotive Electrical Systems Specialist Certificate

This program will prepare you to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification exams for A-6 (Electrical/Electronic Systems) and L-3 (Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist). 

Associate Degree Programs

Cerritos College (California), Associate in Arts, Auto Mechanical Repair: Alternative Fuels Service Technician 

The Alternative Fuels Service Technician degree option prepares students for employment as an entry-level alternative fuels service technician. Through courses focusing on both electrical and mechanical areas of the vehicles students learn how to use specialty equipment and hand tools found in automotive and alternative fuels service and repair facilities. Core topics include electric vehicle operation,, diesel engines, alternative fuels engines, and heavy duty natural gas engines. Design, function, and operation of all these systems is also included in the degree option. Graduates are employed as entry-level technicians, general service technicians, fleet and municipality technicians, or apprentice technicians. Cognitive ability, and hand-eye coordination are recommended for those entering the program.

Cypress College (California), Associate in Science, Automotive Technology, Electric/Hybrid vehicle technician pathway

The Associate in Science degree is an optional part of T-TEN, but recommended for students interested in career growth opportunities. These opportunities include dealer management, a career path at Toyota Motors North America as a Field Technical Specialist or Field Service Trainer, or a career path as an automotive technology instructor. The Toyota T-TEN program provides students with a career path and training as a Toyota or Lexus certified technician. All students will complete an internship at a Toyota or Lexus dealer while completing the T-TEN program. The courses completed will give students both credit at the college, and credit in the Toyota system (which allows work to be performed at the dealership).

Heartland Community College (Illinois), Associate in Applied Science Degree: The Electric Vehicle Technology

The Electric Vehicle Technology Associate in Applied Science Degree is designed to prepare you to meet the demands of the emerging field of manufacture, diagnosis, service, and repair of electric powered vehicles. The AAS is designed for both traditional and nontraditional students with or without prior traditional automotive or electric vehicle experience. Students completing the Electric Vehicle Technology AAS will earn three stackable certificates aligned to in-demand occupations and industry certifications. 

Long Beach City College (California), Associate of Science Degree: Advanced Transportation Technology – Electric Vehicles 

The Long Beach City College Advanced Transportation Technology Associate in Science Degree is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for today’s technicians, service writers, and parts support specialists.  The degree is designed to successfully prepare students for employment with entry and mid-level technicians, service writers, and parts support specialist positions at dealerships, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, and transit.  The program focuses on the industry standard of fix-it-right scores by providing students with the opportunity to develop skills and resolve real-world customer concerns.

Riverside City College (California), Associate of Science Degree: Automotive Hybrid and Electric Vehicle

This program prepares students to apply technical knowledge of the service, diagnosis, and repair of modern hybrid and electric vehicles. Emphasis placed on high voltage battery packs, propulsion systems, charging systems, and related hybrid/EV control systems. 

Wayne State University (Michigan), Associate of Applied Technology in Automotive Technology and Electronic Engineering Technology with an emphasis on on electric-drive vehicles

The overall goal of this program is to develop and implement a comprehensive set of advanced educational programs in electric-drive vehicles.

Undergraduate-Level University Certificate Programs

University of Central Missouri, Undergraduate Certificate, Advanced Vehicle Systems

The Advanced Vehicle Systems Certificate was developed as part of a $750,000 Department of Energy grant received by the Automotive Technology Management program at the University of Central Missouri. This certificate prepares recipients for a high-tech career in the automotive industry, where new technologies are already in the past and future technologies are already here!  With an emphasis on Hybrid and Electric Vehicle technology, advanced driver aids, and autonomous vehicles, this certificate brings UCM graduates up to speed with the latest advancements for tomorrow in the automotive industry.
